does pearled barley count as brown rice?

is barley like brown rice in regards to oils in it? my local guy has 32 ounce bags on sale through sunday for $0.79 a bag. i'd like to pick some up and jar it, but i don't know if it has oil in it like brwon rice and will go bad...

this is pearled barley, not barley flakes (looks like rice).

In the pearling process, a lot of the oils are removed. I've never had pearled barley go rancid on my shelves. That being said, I've packed my long term storage barley in mylar bags with oxygen absorbers. More for "just in case" insurance than anything else.

I'm jealous of your local low price! Kroger has it for $2/lb!!!! The "low" price source (Gordon Food/GFS) is $1/lb.

yeah, that's a super low price. he just redid the sore and is having a week long super grand opening. i'm going to stock up on a lot of stuff. i think he's using stuff like this as a loss leader to get people in.

i'll probably spend all the money i save on barley in the new import beer department though.

I just happen to be making beef barley soup today. Damn thing is I have a jar full of kernels and I can't tell wether it is wheat or barley. Somehow I don't thing beef wheat soup will go over well at dinner. Oh well, I guess it's vegetable beef then.

As a barley grower i was quite shocked at the research this japanese scientist has said.

Basically he searched for ten years for the most complete and nutritious food.

He came up with barley sprouts.
